Toshiba today announced Wipe for Toshiba Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) models, a technology that allows special security capabilities, such as the world’s first[1] ability for sensitive user data to be securely erased when a system is powered-down or when a SED HDD is removed from the system.

We can’t help but enjoy pieces of tech out there that showcase some aspects of current generation technology, but then throw in a curve ball by including something a bit more “old-school.” And, when it comes to old-school, a hand-crank is pretty much as old as it gets.

Here's an iPad mod of questionable usefulness, but it looks nice. Artist Jonas Damon built an enclosure for his iPad that resembles an old cathode-ray television (just like grandma used to have). He only used parts he found lying around his apartment.

Netflix has just closed a deal with Paramount, MGM & Lionsgate allowing movies to be streaming via Netflix instant. The company closed the deal with Epix, a new pay TV channel, for the rights to Paramount, MGM, and Lionsgate movies and cost Netflix $1 billion in the process.

One of the first iPad applications, USA TODAY (free), has been updated to version 1.5, which adds the long-awaited crossword puzzle and customizable market and stock information. I've been waiting for the crossword puzzle to go live for a long time, and now that it's here I'm not disappointed.

Samsung's 3D plasma HDTV plans were given away today through an order page now at Amazon. Set to be unveiled at a press conference, the 50-inch PN50C490 only has a 720p resolution but is about $120 less expensive than the next cheapest 3D flat panel, Samsung's 40-inch LN40C750 LCD.

Nintendo has just confirmed that it has sold 30 million Wii consoles in the US alone, making it the fastest console to reach that milestone in the history of gaming.  The Wii launched back in 2006, and hit the 30m mark fifteen months faster than the next best-selling console.
