Apple TV switches to streaming, gains 99-cent HDTV rentals

Apple today exposed a major overhaul of the Apple TV, long the company's neglected "hobby" product. The new set-top is roughly a quarter the size of the original, and all black. It includes HDMI, USB, Ethernet and optical audio connections, as well as 802.11n Wi-Fi.

Okay so you want to buy Apple TV but you are in Europe. You got used to the fact that in Europe everything costs the same in the Apple Store as in its brother in the U.S. just in Euros which is like a lot more. Not any more. The Apple TV in Europe costs MORE than in the U.S. It costs 119€  ($152).

Here's the new iPod nano. It's shaped like a shuffle, but navigates like an iPod touch. The 6th generation nano is 46 percent smaller and 42 percent lighter than its predecessor. The clickwheel, meanwhile, has been ditched for a tiny, multi-touch touch screen.

As expected, a brand new iPod touch took center stage at today's Apple music event. The new MP3 player didn't feature a name change (iTouch, as predicted earlier) or a complete aesthetic iPhone 4-style redesign, but it did get a number of upgrades.

Steve Jobs has--at least publicly--long written the Apple TV off as "hobby," not discontinuing the line, but not really doing much to change its fortunes, making it a rare dim spot in the Apple product line.

Apple [AAPL] had a big line up of product launches today. One of them was the Apple TV that attempts to revamp the older Apple TV service. Design wise, the Apple TV is 80 percent smaller than the previous model which launched in 2006.

So even though I’m not a fan of the 4th generation iPod Shuffle I think this one is pretty cool. It’s almost as small as the shuffle but this one comes with a rotating multi-touch display. It also features a FM radio and up to 24 hours of playtime. The 8GB model is $149.

I’m a fan of the new the 6th generation iPod nano but the new 4th generation iPod Touch will fly of the shelves. It features the new high resolution retina display, holds up to 64GB of data, is ultra thin and features stuff like HD video recording, face time and the new gyro.

Along with a bunch of other cool stuff Apple unveiled the new 4th generation iPod Shuffle tonight. I have never liked the Shuffle since I really want a display on my music player but at least they are pretty cheap – $49 for a 2GB version. Full info and more images inside.

It was no iPod left behind at today's Apple music event. Even the lowly shuffle got an upgrade. The redesigned music player picked up a clickwheel again, keeping Apple's iconic design alive, after being dumped by the new nano. The diminutive player comes in one size--2GB--which will run you $49.

To commemorate the one-year anniversary of Windows 7, Microsoft will bring back its Windows 7 Family Pack promotion in the US on October 3. The company said buyers with valid Windows XP or Vista licenses on a PC that can run Windows 7 can purchase three Windows 7 Home Premium licenses for $150.

The last thing Steve Jobs presented today was the brand new Apple TV. It’s brand new, really small (1/4 the size of the old Apple TV), very capable device that they will sell for $99.
