Yahoo will work with Goldman Sachs to help it defend a takeover bid, unnamed sources said in a Bloomberg Thursday report. While no bids have yet been made, AOL has been rumored to be putting together an offer.

FCC proposes fund to spread 3G, 4G to rural areas

The FCC at its monthly meeting today proposed the creation of a mobility fund. The concept would create a single-instance fund between $100 million and $300 million to deploy 3G and ultimately 4G in rural areas or other regions where any modern cellular data has been unavailable.

T-Mobile officially lowering soft cap to 5GB

T-Mobile will soon reduce its soft data cap to 5GB per month, from 10GB, as promised back in April, TmoNews reported based on a leaked image. Starting on October 16, users who go over the 5GB allotment will get their data connection speeds throttled rather than face overage fees.

Computer maker Dell has received the permission to settle accounting-fraud claims brought against it by the US Securities and Exchange Commission from a judge by paying a $100 million fine. US District Judge Richard Leon approved the settlement in Washington on Wednesday.

In a low-key post this week, Dell said it would skip Android 2.1 entirely for most users and move to 2.2. While O2 users got 2.1 this summer, its available staff and promises to carriers meant it would axe the older update for the US and everyone else.

Microsoft in a German Facebook post (since pulled) implied that the upcoming Xbox 360 Dashboard update will finally eliminate the 100-user friend cap on Xbox Live. It explained that "you can now [have] up to 1,000 friends [on] your friends list" and suggested using Facebook to help get more.
