Cell Phones Connecting World’s Poor: Report

Sixty percent of the world's population now has a cell phone, according to a 3G Americas study released back in December. A new U.N. report goes further, saying that cell phones are fast becoming the communications vehicle of choice particularly in poor countries, according to the Associated Press.

Sony's Vaio P has a cheaper, lesser knockoff, the Vaino. It's somewhat larger than the P -- nearly Vaio T-series sized, in fact -- and has standard-issue netbook specs. M8cool sells them for just shy of $400: good luck getting them to ship it to you.

The latest Mac mini is barely a day old and already we are getting the first look inside the updated computer. Apple kept to the original design though which still requires the use of a putty knife and a bit of patience to open her up.

So the rumors were correct. Apple laid off 50 folks in enterprise sales. The rumors that it was a major lay-off were untrue and anything larger than about 50 would have required them to file a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) act. Oh well. Back to consuming iPods.

The Treo Pro was supposed to launch in January on Sprint and then it was rumored to launch on the 15th of February, but that never happened either. Then we realized the Pre was coming, so the Treo Pro didn’t matter at all.

British carrier Vodafone will carry HTC's Magic, which has a 3.2 megapixel camera, GPS and a touchscreen display, from April. Vodafone has one of those 3D twirly java applets that promises to show me what it looks like from any angle, but it doesn't work for me.

I love this art work, Woman in Tub, 1949. By Saul Steinberg(1914 - 1999), an American artist whose magic lit up the pages and covers of The New Yorker for six decades. Note:Born in Romania, Steinberg studied architecture in the 1930s in Milan, where he gained early fame as a cartoonist.
